A program of works that, in one way or another, are very unusual for their times.

Estefanía Pardo Perez, composer

Our program starts with “Paikuna Saqinku,” a work by Estefanía Pardo Perez, winner of the LCO call-for-scores. Selected from over 100 scores from all over the world, “Paikuna Saqinku” (Quechua for “They are displaced”) sheds light upon the struggles of Colombian ethnic communities as they fight to protect their rights to their own lands and clean water.
Estefanía Pardo has 10 years of experience composing original music for television series, documentaries, short films, and video games. Her concert music has earned her accolades around the globe.

Roi Karni, bassett clarinet

Weeks before he died, Mozart wrote his seminal clarinet concerto. But he did not write it for the standard clarinet. In this concert, you will hear the concert probably as Mozart originally intended it to sound - reconstructed from parts used in first performances (the original score has been lost!) Hear this concerto as you probably have never heard it before!

Bassett clarinet virtuoso Roi Karni will perform this very well known piece on this very unusual instrument. Roi started playing the clarinet when he was eight. Since then, he has been awarded first prize in several competitions. Roi is originally from Jerusalem, and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at The Juilliard School, studying with Charles Neidich.

Eve de Castro-Robinson, composer

Eve De Castro-Robinson’s “Cyprian’s Dance” is an exploration of grindcore punk band through a string orchestra. Written for her son Cyprian, De Castro-Robinson uses different kinds of notation and innovative ways to create sounds that bend time and sound into a magical landscape. This is the first time “Cyprian’s Dance” will be performed in the USA before.
Eve de Castro-Robinson has been commissioned and performed by a wide variety of performers, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia, the Nash Ensemble of London and many soloists including Alexander Ivashkin, Jane Manning, Nicholas Isherwood and Stephen De Pledge. Her output ranges from large orchestral to vocal, chamber and electroacoustic works which are performed in NZ and internationally.

The only classical symphony to have been written in F-sharp minor (and one of only four symphonies that we know in that key), Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, the “Farewell Symphony,” is well known for its theatrics. But new research shows that its raison d’être is not what it was previously thought. Come, enjoy the music, and learn about this very rare musical offering.
